A nursery move is less about the stuff and more about the routine. The goal is to keep the baby's day as normal as possible while the rest of the house is in totes, then rebuild the room fast on the other end.
Pack the nursery last, unpack it first
Keep the nursery functional until the final day. Pack decor, extra blankets, stored clothes, and toys early, but leave the crib, changing setup, and a few days of clothing until the end. On arrival, make the nursery the first room you fully set up.
Build a first-night baby tote
- Two to three days of clothes, diapers, wipes, and diaper cream
- Crib sheet, a couple of sleep sacks, and a favorite blanket
- Sound machine, night light, and monitor
- Bottles, formula or pump parts, and a small dish soap
- Two or three familiar toys or books
This tote rides in your car, not the truck, and gets opened first.
The crib
Take a photo of the crib from a few angles before disassembly. Bag all hardware and tape it to a slat or drop it in your essentials tote — never loose in a big tote. Keep the assembly instructions with the hardware. If you can, reassemble the crib the same night you arrive so the baby has a familiar place to sleep.
Dresser, changing pad, and diaper stock
You can leave lightweight clothing in dresser drawers if the dresser travels upright and secured; tape the drawers shut. Pack the changing pad on top of a tote where it won't get bent. Move your bulk diaper and wipe supply in its own tote — you'll want it accessible before anything else.
Safety check the new room before setup
Before the crib goes back up, do outlet covers, cord management for blinds, and furniture anchors. It's much easier to do in an empty room than after everything's in place.
