Books are deceptively heavy — a tote packed full of them can hit 50 pounds before it's even half full. The goal is to spread the weight out and protect the bindings.
Use Small Loads, Not Full Totes
Fill a tote no more than one-third to one-half with books, then top it off with something light — linens, throw pillows, stuffed animals. A tote you can't lift is a tote that gets dropped.
Position Spines Down or Lay Flat
Stand hardcovers upright with the spine against the bottom of the tote, or lay them flat in stacks. Never pack a book spine-up or fanned open — the binding warps under the weight of everything above it.
Keep Valuable or Sentimental Books Separate
First editions, signed copies, leather-bound sets, and anything with sentimental value should go in their own tote, wrapped individually in packing paper, and travel in your car rather than the truck.
Label by Room and by Weight
Mark book totes with the destination room and a small 'HEAVY' note so whoever's loading the truck puts them low and doesn't stack three of them on a box of dishes.
