Dishes break in a move for one reason: they get packed flat and stacked, and the weight cracks the ones on the bottom. Pack them like records instead.
Stand Plates on Their Edge
Wrap each plate in packing paper, then stand them vertically in the tote, on edge, packed tight so they can't shift. A plate on edge survives a bump that shatters a flat stack.
Cushion the Bottom and Fill Every Gap
Put two inches of crushed paper or a folded towel in the bottom of the tote. Fill every space between and around the dishes so nothing can move — movement is what breaks things, not the drive.
Nest Glasses and Stuff Stemware
Wrap glasses individually and pack them upright, never on their sides. Roll paper into wine-glass bowls before wrapping. Heavier glassware goes on the bottom, delicate stemware on top.
Keep Dish Totes Light and Labeled
Don't fill a dish tote to the brim — stop at a weight one person can carry comfortably. Mark it 'FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP' and tell whoever loads the truck to keep it on top.
