Nothing sours a move-in like discovering the electricity is off. Set start dates for the new place and stop dates for the old one about two weeks ahead.
Electricity and Gas First
These take the longest and matter the most. Contact the providers for your new address 2–3 weeks out with a start date of the day before you move in, so heat and power are on when you arrive.
Water and Trash
Often handled by the municipality rather than a private company — check the town or village website. Some require a transfer form or a deposit. Set trash service so you're not hoarding boxes with nowhere to put them.
Internet Last-Mile, Booked Early
Installation slots fill up, especially at month-end when everyone moves. Book your internet install as soon as you have a closing or lease date — ideally for moving day or the day after.
Don't Forget
Home security or smart-home service transfer, propane if the house uses it, well and septic servicing if applicable, and updating auto-pay so old and new accounts don't both bill you.
Lock your tote delivery and pickup dates early so the moving logistics are one less thing to juggle.
